We humans are an interesting species. We crave adventure and travel, yet we tend to return home, grateful the adventure is over. We seek to spend time out with friends only to be happy to go home and enjoy some alone time or be in the company of family only. No matter how far we may stray in life, the urge to simply be at home again is the one constant.

The rest of life continues in a similar vein. Adventures do not necessarily cease when one becomes a senior citizen. The urge to spend time with friends does not lessen with age. Likewise, the desire to have a place to call home never leaves.

At Snyder Village, adventure and socializing can both continue to be a part of life with the added bonus that home is not far away – it’s all around you.

Making the Home

No house can stand without someone first putting in the work of building it. In order to make Snyder Village the home it is for the many seniors living there, staff members like Mallory Stutzman and Deb Albertson put in a considerable amount of effort.

That isn’t to say it is not rewarding, however. In fact, the work is seen by many as a calling. “From the moment I enrolled in nursing school straight out of high school, I knew I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives,” shares Snyder Village Assisted Living Director

Mallory Stutzman. “During my first semester, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and began working at a local skilled nursing facility. It was there that I discovered a profound connection with the senior population – a connection that would shape the course of my career.”

For Home Care Director Deb Albertson, her desire was simply to provide service as a home health aide. Instead, Snyder Village then became a home of sorts for her as she was interviewed and hired on the spot.

Their passion for caregiving has never left Deb and Mallory. Even when questioning other potential career paths, the call to stay working with seniors has remained. For Mallory, while attending nursing school and gaining experience as a Patient Care Tech in pediatrics at OSF St. Francis, her “heart remained with the elderly,” she says.

“Returning to skilled nursing felt like coming home,” Mallory continues. “I later expanded my experience into assisted living and hospice care, further solidifying my calling to serve the senior community. After 16 years as a CNA, I was ready to grow even further – I returned to nursing school, completed my degree, and reentered the field with renewed purpose and expanded skills.”

Continuum of Home, Continuum of Care

Just as our needs change throughout our developing years, so do they shift in our senior years. Through temporary health struggles, lessening strength, or slowly declining abilities, Snyder Village can remain home through it all. As Deb states, Snyder Village is, “a whole service provider.”

On the 40-plus acre campus of Snyder Village, a continuum of care is provided. From independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, therapy, and home care, residents can “transition between care levels as their needs evolve,” says Mallory, “without leaving the community they know and trust.” This multi-level care approach means residents can make seamless moves from assisted living to higher levels of care without ever needing to leave their home campus. This minimizes disruption in their lives and maintains a consistent care environment.

Of course, as the residents’ needs may evolve, the need for a staff well-trained in all aspects of these changes is great. Mallory asserts, “Snyder Village’s Assisted Living staff is proactively prepared to meet the growing demand for senior care through a combination of specialized training, strategic staffing, and a commitment to continuity of care. Staff members at Snyder Village receive comprehensive training tailored to the needs of seniors, particularly those with cognitive impairments.”

Rooted in Christian principles, Snyder Village also offers spiritual support through Bible studies held on campus, devotionals, hymn sings, and services for both Catholics and Protestants. Nevertheless, “the community welcomes residents of all backgrounds, emphasizing a loving and dignified atmosphere,” Mallory assures.

Aging with Grace

Everyone needs help now and then. That is a fact of life that never changes, regardless of age. While needing help may affect one’s pride, there is no need to feel somehow diminished by the need. At Snyder Village, a variety of programs are in place to provide whatever help might be needed while allowing each resident to maintain their dignity.

Home care is one such aspect of help which Snyder Village provides. “Home health is vital to seniors aging in place as it enables them to maintain independence, stay in their homes, and receive the support they need,” Deb explains. “This help allows them to retain some control over their daily lives and routines, giving a sense of well-being, and reducing loneliness and isolation.”

For residents in the assisted living community, extra help may be in order. For short-term rehabilitation following a health event or medical procedure, the Snyder Village Health Center will see them through. Fractures, recovery from joint replacement or other surgeries, illness, or hospitalization often result in decreased mobility and strength. Spending time at the Health Center can help a resident work back to their previous health level.

“In many cases, seniors may also require rehab to regain independence in daily activities after a fall, stroke, or prolonged illness,” adds Mallory. “Sometimes residents my exhibit a permanent decline and would benefit from a higher level of care, which is when a transition to the Health Center may become permanent.”

Snyder Village also provides various forms of health aid beyond the physical therapy provided at the Health Center. Along with physical therapy, “occupational and speech therapies are vital components of senior living,” Mallory says, “because they directly support older adults in maintaining independence, safety, and overall quality of life.”

Kindness Makes it a Home

As Mallory and Deb look over their careers, they take note of the most important aspect of those careers: service. “Since becoming a nurse, I’ve devoted my career to assisted living, where I’ve had the opportunity to rise through the ranks to Wellness Director and now Assisted Living Director,” Mallory says. “Every step of the way, my dedication to elder care has only deepened. I truly believe I’ve found my calling, and I can’t imagine a more meaningful or fulfilling path than continuing to serve the senior community I love so deeply.”

It is through service toward others – that selfless expression of love and kindness – that, ultimately, makes up the greatest facet of being home. As American writer Catherine Ryan Hyde once said: “It’s like coming home when you give kindness. Kindness changes us as human beings.”

At Snyder Village that change can be felt on a daily basis, and it is that kindness that makes Snyder Village a true home.

The Gift of Care: How Home Care Enhances Senior Living

As we age, the simple joys of life — remaining in a beloved home, engaging in daily activities, and connecting with others — become essential to our well-being. For seniors and their families, ensuring these needs are met can be both a challenge and a priority. That’s where Snyder Village Home Care steps in, offering compassionate, professional assistance designed to enrich the lives of seniors while providing peace of mind for their families.

The Personal Touch of Home Care

Home care offers something that institutionalized care settings cannot — a deeply personalized approach. Our focus is on tailoring support to each senior’s unique needs. Whether it’s help with daily tasks, companionship, or assistance with mobility, caregivers work closely with families to create a care plan that meets specific requirements.

Remaining in the comfort and familiarity of one’s home has undeniable benefits. Seniors are surrounded by their cherished belongings and continue to experience the routines they love, which fosters a sense of independence and preserves their dignity. These factors are crucial for emotional well-being and contribute significantly to overall happiness and quality of life.

Assisting with the Challenges of Daily Living

For many seniors, even basic daily tasks can become difficult due to age-related challenges, disabilities, or the need for physical rehabilitation. Snyder Village Home Care professionals aid with activities, such as:

Meal preparation and cleanup

Medication reminders

Bathing, grooming, and personal hygiene

Mobility support

These services do more than just meet physical needs — they empower seniors to maintain their autonomy. By reducing the risks associated with accidents or injuries and promoting independence, Snyder Village caregivers help seniors lead safer, more fulfilling lives.

More Than Care — Companionship

Loneliness and isolation are common struggles among seniors, particularly for those who live alone or have limited social connections. The emotional toll of isolation can significantly affect mental health and even physical well-being.

We understand the importance of social interaction and emotional support. Caregivers provide more than just practical assistance — we offer friendship and meaningful companionship. From engaging in heartfelt conversations to participating in recreational activities or community outings, these moments of connection brighten each day and foster mental and emotional resilience.

Easing the Burden on Family Caregivers

Caring for a loved one is a profound act of love, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Many family caregivers juggle multiple responsibilities, such as full-time jobs, raising children, and maintaining their own health. This balancing act can lead to stress, exhaustion, and even burnout.

Snyder Village Home Care steps in as a trusted partner to ease this burden. By providing professional assistance, caregivers allow families to focus on their relationships rather than the daily demands of caregiving. This support enables family members to take breaks, recharge, and maintain their own well-being. Ultimately, a healthier caregiver translates to better care for the senior, creating a harmonious and supportive family dynamic.

Comprehensive and Compassionate Care

Choosing the right home care provider is an important decision, and Snyder Village Home Care is committed to delivering the highest standard of service. Their caregivers are trained professionals who bring expertise, compassion, and a genuine dedication to enhancing the lives of seniors.

Serving seniors across Peoria, East Peoria, Metamora, Morton, Pekin, Washington, and other surrounding communities in Peoria, Woodford, Marshall, and Tazewell counties, Snyder Village Home Care has built a reputation for excellence. Families can trust that their loved ones are in capable hands, receiving individualized attention and support in the comfort of their own homes.

Why Choose Snyder Village Home Care?

The value of home care extends beyond practical assistance — it’s about providing seniors with the ability to live their lives with dignity, joy, and independence. It’s about giving families the confidence that their loved ones are cared for with the utmost respect and professionalism.

For seniors, home care means more than receiving help with daily tasks; it means enjoying companionship, maintaining their routines, and continuing to thrive in an environment they cherish. For families, it means peace of mind, knowing that their loved ones are in compassionate hands.

As we become more and more digital, so too do the methods of deception. One of the most devious forms of deception targets the senior population through scams. These schemes, designed to mislead and defraud, often prey on the vulnerabilities of older individuals.

Among the many scams, those impersonating the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) stand out as particularly deceitful and damaging. By examining the nature of scams targeting seniors and utilizing resources, we can shed light on these malicious practices and share practices designed to protect vulnerable populations. Scams targeting seniors often operate under the form of authority, exploiting trust and fear to manipulate victims. Scammers posing as IRS agents capitalize on the widespread fear of taxation and legal consequences to coerce unsuspecting seniors into compliance. They employ various tactics, including threatening phone calls, emails, and texts, to intimidate victims into disclosing sensitive personal information or making fraudulent payments.

One common scam involves callers impersonating IRS agents and demanding immediate payment for alleged back taxes or penalties. These callers often use aggressive language and threats of legal action to instill fear and coerce compliance. In many cases, seniors, fearing repercussions, comply with the demands, only to realize later that they have fallen victim to a scam.

The IRS, recognizing the prevalence and detrimental impact of such scams, has taken proactive measures to educate the public and empower individuals to recognize and report fraudulent activity. Their website, irs.gov, serves as a comprehensive resource, offering guidance on identifying scams, protecting personal information, and reporting fraudulent activity. Seniors can familiarize themselves with common tactics used by scammers and learn how to differentiate legitimate IRS communications from fraudulent ones. The website provides valuable information on red flags to watch for, such as demands for immediate payment, threats of arrest, or requests for personal or financial information. The website offers guidance on safeguarding personal information and minimizing the risk of falling victim to scams. Simple yet effective measures, such as being cautious of unsolicited communications and verifying the authenticity of purported IRS agents, can help mitigate the risk of exploitation.

In addition to prevention, irs.gov emphasizes the importance of reporting fraudulent activity to the appropriate authorities. By promptly reporting suspected scams, individuals can help law enforcement agencies investigate and combat fraudulent schemes, ultimately protecting others from falling victim to similar exploitation. The collaborative efforts of the IRS and law enforcement agencies have made significant progress in combating scams targeting seniors.

Through public awareness campaigns, outreach initiatives, and enforcement actions, authorities aim to disrupt criminal networks and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. However, despite these efforts, scams continue to evolve and adapt to circumvent detection. Scammers apply sophisticated tactics and exploit vulnerabilities in increasingly creative ways, making it imperative for seniors to remain vigilant and informed.

In conclusion, scams targeting seniors represent a pervasive and damaging form of exploitation that undermines trust and financial security. By sharing resources from irs.gov and educating the public on recognizing and reporting fraudulent activity, we can empower individuals to protect themselves and their communities from exploitation. Together, we must remain vigilant in the fight against scams and uphold our collective commitment to safeguarding the vulnerable members of society.

At Snyder Village, our goal is to provide a safe place for our residents. While encouraging independence, we stive to support our residents and foster an environment of continued education. In doing so, our residents are given the opportunity to participate in presentations – specifically to learn about scams and how to be proactive with their digital footprint.

For many of us, the members of our family are the people we value most in life, and we would do anything to protect and care for them. Perhaps you have taken on a caretaker role for your loved one, whether unexpectedly or planned. Your willingness to help may be fueled by your love and good intention, but for many, the role of caregiver can quickly become overwhelming. Much rests on the shoulders of a caregiver – not only with managing household duties like cleaning, cooking, and laundry – but also ensuring medication is handled correctly and personal hygiene needs are met. Even more, caregivers are often looked upon for emotional support and companionship.

If you are a caregiver, it’s vital to protect yourself from the toll the role can take on your own health. The stress felt can lead to “Caregiver Burnout”, a condition described by the Cleveland Clinic as a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. It may be accompanied by a change in attitude, from a positive and caring outlook to one of negativity and unconcern. Burnout occurs when caregivers try to do more than they are physically or financially able and don’t get the help they need. A lack of control, unreasonable demands, and unrealistic expectations can all attribute to burnout.

Some warning signs of caregiver burnout include:

Anger or frustration toward the person you’re caring for

Anxiety

Depression

Denial about the severity of your loved one’s condition

Physical health problems such as insomnia, weight gain, and fatigue

Irritability

Inability to concentrate

Social isolation and withdrawal

If you are feeling the effects of burnout, you’re not alone. According to a November 2021 study by Genworth, 42 percent of family caregivers experience depression, mood swings, or resentment as a result of their caretaking. Thirty percent reported sleep deprivation, and 43 percent reported the demands of the role have negatively impacted their relationship with their spouse or partner. Whether you are already experiencing the effects of burnout or are seeking preventative measures to avoid it, there are several ways to reduce stress and practice self-care.

Ways to Reduce Caregiver Stress

Be Kind To Yourself – Recognize that being a caregiver can be difficult. Release any guilt when it comes to taking time for your own self-care. Even though you may feel consumed with taking care of another’s health, be sure to not neglect your own. Go to the doctor when needed, get routine exams, and make exercise, sleep, and healthy eating a priority. Taking care of yourself will only increase the level of care you can provide to your loved one.

Seek Support – Being a caregiver can be isolating, which can lead to feelings of depression and helplessness. Seek support and understanding from other caregivers by attending a support group or connect with friends to help boost your mood. Remember – you are not in this alone!

Use Technology – You can simplify your life by taking advantage of available technology. Instead of making phone calls or sending individual emails, you can streamline communication with extended family and friends by keeping them up-to-date on your loved one’s health by using websites like CaringBridge or PostHope. Various apps are available to help keep track of medical history and set medication reminders. And online sources, such as the U.S. Administration on Aging’s “Eldercare Locator”, are available to connect you with local resources.

Get Help – Acknowledge that you will need a break now and then. If your loved one requires 24/7 care, find a volunteer to help out and give you time to do something you love. Longer breaks can be arranged by utilizing a paid service like Home Care or Respite Care. These services allow the caregiver to take a vacation or attend a function without worrying about their loved one. Respite care in a residential facility can be provided for just an overnight stay or for as long as a few weeks. In-home care can be provided by service professionals, such as those from Snyder Village Home Care.

Deb Albertson, Director of Snyder Village Home Care, understands the demands caregiving can bring. “Taking care of a loved one who has dementia, physical disabilities, or other age-related conditions makes demands on your time, energy, and emotions that can easily become overwhelming,” she explains. “Caregiving can tax your patience and foster fatigue, frustration, and guilt, becoming a grueling grind that takes a heavy toll on the body and mind. That’s why it’s so important to watch for signs of caregiver burnout and take proactive steps to deal with it before it spirals out of control.” Deb reiterates the importance of asking for help and taking time for yourself. “You can ask a professional home care agency to help,” she says. The agency can sit with your loved one, giving you the opportunity to go shopping or to a doctor appointment.” For information on Snyder Village Home Care services, call (309) 367-2300 or visit www.snydervillage.com.

Taking on the role of caregiver can be a selfless, rewarding phase of life. By practicing self-awareness and self-care, you can avoid burnout and instead provide a healthy, positive experience for both you and your loved one.

Empathy – we know it’s important, we all need it, and we all want it – but what is it really? Sympathy and empathy are often confused with one another but have distinct differences. Sympathy is sharing the feelings of another and understanding their feelings from your own perspective, whereas empathy involves trying to understand another’s feelings from their perspective instead of your own. Empathy requires putting yourself in another’s shoes to gain perspective on why they may be feeling what they are feeling. It’s an important component in connecting with another person, and it is vital in today’s senior care.

Growing older can be hard. There are changes that occur to the body, changes in ability, changes in independence, and changes in relationships. As people grow older they become more vulnerable, and needs can increase. If you have a loved one in your life who is aging, it can be difficult to know how to best support them. Often times, empathy can be one of the most important things you can give them. In today’s culture where being youthful is praised, older adults are often left with the impression that they are insignificant or a burden if their needs increase. But each individual is inherently valuable, no matter their age, and empathy can help remind them of such.

Using Empathy to Care for Older Adults

If you are a caregiver for an aging loved one or you work in the aged care sector, there are several ways in which you can use empathy in your caregiving. Often times, caregiving becomes task oriented. With a focus on duties like bathing, dressing, and feeding, providing emotional support can get overlooked. By imagining what struggles or changes the older adult is going through, your focus may shift. What would it feel like to have others bathe, dress, or feed you? If you lived alone and didn’t receive many visitors, how would loneliness affect you? How would you react to facing daily or chronic health struggles or changes?

At Snyder Village, a life plan community in Metamora, IL, the focus is not only on providing for the physical needs of older adults but also the emotional and spiritual needs. Heather O’Brien, Health Center Administrator at Snyder Village, explains the importance of empathy in the care of residents and the approach her staff takes to ensure whole-body wellness. “Our staff believes it is important to take adequate time to get to know our residents and who they were over the course of their lives,” says Heather. “The areas that were important to a resident in their younger years continue to be important as they age. By gaining this valuable information, it allows the staff to engage in relevant person-centered conversations which enhance the comfort level of the resident and staff as they mutually work together to complete all care tasks and activities each day.”

Ways to Show Empathy

It can be difficult for an older adult to show or explain their needs. They may try to take on burdens themselves, such as physical limitations, financial stress, or loneliness without asking for help. Practicing empathy can help you identify needs they may be experiencing – even if they fail to voice them.

Ask How They Are Feeling – Even if you don’t suspect anything is currently wrong, checking in on your loved one’s emotions periodically will help build trust. The more you open up dialogue around your loved one’s feelings, the more they will feel comfortable sharing with you when they do need help.

Actively Listen – When trying to understand what someone is going through, listening is more important than talking. Give your loved one space to express their needs or concerns. Practice listening to understand instead of listening to respond. Keep eye contact with them while in conversation and use open-ended questions to encourage dialogue.

Don’t Focus on Quick Fixes – It can be tempting to offer a quick fix when a problem is identified but instead, try to understand the root cause of your loved one’s behavior or issue. Caring enough to target what is really going on will only help you both in the long run.

Practice Patience – So many of us are focused on moving quickly from one task to the next, but empathy forces us to slow down. If empathy requires us to look at life through the lens of our loved one, often times that means accepting a slower pace. Older adults may move slower, eat slower, and even think or speak slower. Trying to rush them to keep up with your pace will only create tension and stress. If an older adult is capable of feeding themselves, walking, or doing other tasks safely – just at a slower pace – let them. Empathy reminds us how important dignity and independence are to each of us, even if it involves handling life at a slower pace.

Caring for an adult who is aging or facing a progressive disease such as Alzheimer’s can challenge our patience. Trying to understand what they’re going through and validating their feelings can result in a better experience for everyone involved. A little kindness goes a long way.

Brushing your hair or making breakfast may not seem like large tasks, but when you lose the ability to perform them on your own, you realize just how important those once mundane tasks really are. Although a loss of independence is a natural part of aging, coping with it does not always come easily, and often times a helping hand is needed. The role of a home care aide is to help complete everyday tasks to allow a person to remain in his/her own home. Having this assistance can be life changing for someone whose independence is being challenged.

At Snyder Village Home Care, the caregivers assist with personal grooming (bathing, dressing, toileting, etc.), meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders, and transportation for errands or appointments. Each member of the Snyder Village Home Care team is screened and administered a background check before hiring. Once on the team, the caregivers are trained and insured, which allows for a professional and reliable experience for the clients.

Kenzie Hawkins, a Snyder Village Home Care Aide, gave insight into the role of a caregiver when she was recently asked about a typical day on the job.

Q: How many home care clients do you have, and how much time do you spend with each of them?
Kenzie: “On a typical day, I see three to five clients. I spend anywhere from a half an hour with them to up to four hours.”

People using home care services have their own unique needs and requirements. While some clients only require a brief check-in, others need around-the-clock care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Snyder Village Home Care accommodates the individual client’s needs, whatever they may be.

Q: Where are your clients located?
K: “I travel to Roanoke, Metamora, Minonk, Kappa, and Germantown Hills to see my clients.”

Snyder Village Home Care serves residents in four counties: Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, and Marshall. Most clients are in a private residence; however, a home care agency can provide care wherever home may currently be. For some, that is a senior living facility or a temporary living situation, such as staying with family or friends.

Q: During a routine visit, what types of services do you do?
K: “I help with making meals, housekeeping, bathing, companion care, medication checks, and laundry.”

When considering home care services, it’s important to note the difference between home care and home health care. A home care service provides only non-medical care. It does not provide medical services like therapy, skilled nursing care, administrating of medications or injections, medical testing, pain management, or wound care.

Q: Is there a typical home care client? Why might someone use home care services?
K: “We are basically there to help someone with a task they are either no longer capable of completing or to help them complete it on their own.”

Home care services are most often used by individuals who are aging and need assistance to live independently, those who are managing chronic health issues, those who are recovering from a medical setback, or those with special needs. Having access to a reliable caregiver brings peace of mind knowing help is available if and when it’s needed.

Q: What is your favorite part of being a home care aide?
K: “I enjoy getting to know new people, hearing their stories, learning about their lives, and how grateful they are for the service we provide.”

Often times, one of the most valued services a caregiver provides is companionship. Joining the client in an activity they enjoy, such as doing puzzles, playing cards, or watching a baseball game, can lift the spirits of the client and improve their emotional wellbeing. Engaging in conversation can also help boost mental stimulation and provide entertainment for an individual.

Q: Would you encourage others to apply for the position of a home care aide?
K: “Absolutely! Someone who is empathetic and hard working would be a good fit for the job. Having a background in healthcare and/or customer service is a plus.”

Interested applicants can learn more about the role of a home care aide and apply to join the Snyder Village team at www.snydervillage.com.

Q: If you had to pick one word to describe your job, what would it be?
K: “Rewarding. My clients are genuinely grateful for the things I do for them, and they let me know all the time. I have never felt so meaningful in employment before.”

If you’ve identified that your parent or loved one needs extra help, you may wonder what your next step should be and what to expect from a home care service. A simple phone call can begin the process. At Snyder Village, our home care team will begin by asking several questions about your loved one’s needs to learn which services would help the most. A home assessment will then be scheduled, where a Snyder Village case manager will come to the home to meet you and your loved one. During the assessment, the case manager will inspect the home for any potential dangers (tripping hazards, mobility barriers, etc.), assess the individual and his/her needs, discuss pricing, and set up a schedule and care plan.

Trained caregivers can ease stress for everyone involved by not only taking care of household duties, provide transportation, or help with hygiene and personal care, but they can also be a companion with a listening ear who can offer emotional and intellectual engagement.

Caring for a family member or loved one who is no longer able to live independently can be the full-time job you never planned on having. Caregiving can be one of the most rewarding and loving ‘jobs’ you’ll ever have, but it can also be one of the most demanding. Much rests on the shoulders of a caregiver – not only taking care of household duties like cleaning, cooking, and laundry – but also ensuring health and wellness by helping with medications and personal hygiene needs. On top of an already lengthy list of duties, caregivers are often relied upon to provide companionship and emotional support as well.
The stress felt by a caregiver can lead to ‘Caregiver Burnout’, a condition that displays symptoms of irritability, problems with sleep, weight gain, fatigue, social isolation, and feelings of hopelessness. If you are a caregiver, one of the best ways to care for your loved one is to make sure you’re caring for yourself too. Being a happy and healthy version of yourself will only increase the level of care you can provide for your loved one. Below are some simple self-care tips you can begin putting into practice today.

Self-Care Tips for Caregivers

1) Be Kind to Yourself
Being kind to yourself is the foundation of self-care. Recognize that being a caregiver is hard work and give yourself credit for taking on the tough and complex work that it is. Limit negative self-talk and criticism and release any guilty thoughts when it comes to taking time for your own self-care and well-being. Be willing to extend grace to yourself and to forgive yourself. It’s impossible to be a perfect caregiver all day, every day, so release yourself from these unrealistic expectations.

2) Take Care of Your Own Health
When your life seems to revolve around another person’s health and well-being, it can be all too easy to neglect your own. Take the time to go to the doctor when needed, get routine exams, and get your flu shot. Make exercise a priority – even when facing exhaustion. It will help boost your energy levels and your mood! Try your best to not let convenience rule your diet and eating habits. Seek out real food ingredients that will help fuel your body – not hinder it. And allowing your body to rest and get adequate sleep is vital. Getting the proper rest will help your body recharge and allow you to face whatever challenges the next day may bring.

3) Stay Connected
Being a caregiver can become isolating, which can quickly lead to feelings of depression and helplessness. Even if you feel tired or sad, it’s important to stay connected with friends and a network of support. Having a support system has been scientifically proven to improve your outlook on life and your overall health. A simple phone call to a friend may do the trick in boosting your mood. Support groups for caregivers are often available in communities and can be a great resource for finding understanding and camaraderie with people in a similar life stage. If you are a person of faith, finding others in a Bible study to connect with or spending time alone in prayer can help you feel grounded and refreshed.

4) Take a Break
Everyone needs a break now and then. If your loved one requires 24/7 care, find a friend or volunteer to help out and allow yourself some time to do something you enjoy on your own. Catch a movie, go out to eat, take a walk, or visit a friend. Do something not related to caregiving and try to steer any conversations away from the topic of caregiving during this break. Longer breaks can be arranged by utilizing a paid service like Home Care or Respite Care. These services can allow the caregiver to take a vacation or attend an important family function knowing their loved one is still receiving great care. Residential facilities, like Snyder Village’s Health Center, can provide around-the-clock care for your loved one in a safe environment. Your loved one will enjoy being given the opportunity to participate in the facilities’ planned outings and activities. Respite care in a residential facility can be provided for an overnight stay, for a few days, or for a few weeks, allowing for you to take that vacation without worry.

In-home respite care can be provided by Home Care professionals. This type of care allows your loved one to stay in the comfort and familiarity of their own home while you are away. Home Care professionals can provide companion care, personal care (such as help with bathing and dressing), and homemaker services (cleaning, meal prep, and laundry). Deb Albertson, director of Snyder Village Home Care, notes that she and her team work closely with caregivers and their loved ones to provide various types of coverage and assistance when needed. “Respite care is short-term coverage that provides a break for the caregiver,” she says. “In some cases, our professionals go in and provide coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and in other cases, we help out with transportation, like running to the grocery store or taking them to a doctor’s appointment.”

5) Laugh Often
In the midst of a hard day or a hard week, it’s important to remember your sense of humor. Take the time to watch your favorite comedy television show or movie, read the comics, or watch a funny video online. Cute animal videos can do a world of good for your mood! If possible, share the humor with the person you are caring for. Laughing together can be some of the best medicine for what may be an intense and challenging situation.

You don’t have to succumb to ‘Caregiver Burnout’ if you make yourself and your well-being a priority. It’s not only your loved one who deserves your love and care – You deserve to be cared for as well!
