Protecting the People Who Protected Us

As an adult child, one of my biggest priorities is making sure my parent is safe, happy, and supported. While we often think about physical health and well-being, there is another growing concern that keeps many families awake at night: scams and online fraud.

Today’s world is more connected than ever. Technology helps us stay in touch with loved ones, manage finances, and access important information. Unfortunately, it also creates new opportunities for scammers who specifically target older adults. These criminals often prey on trust, fear, and confusion, using sophisticated tactics to convince seniors to share personal information or send money.

One of the most common scams involves criminals pretending to be representatives from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). They may call, email, or text, claiming that back taxes are owed and demanding immediate payment. Some even threaten arrest, legal action, or loss of benefits if their demands aren’t met. These messages are designed to create panic and pressure people into acting before they have time to verify the information.

As family members, we want our loved ones to feel confident and empowered—not fearful. That’s why education is one of the most effective tools we have in protecting seniors from fraud. The IRS provides valuable resources through irs.gov to help individuals recognize scams, safeguard personal information, and report suspicious activity. Learning the warning signs—such as demands for immediate payment, requests for gift cards, threats of arrest, or unsolicited requests for personal information—can make all the difference.

While government agencies and law enforcement continue to work hard to combat these scams, fraudsters are constantly changing their tactics. Staying informed and maintaining open conversations with loved ones about suspicious calls, emails, and messages is essential.

At Snyder Village, resident safety extends beyond our walls. We understand the concerns families have about protecting their loved ones in today’s digital world. That’s why we provide educational opportunities designed to help residents recognize common scams, understand how to protect their personal information, and confidently navigate technology.

As a family member, there’s comfort in knowing that my loved one isn’t facing these challenges alone. Through ongoing education, support, and awareness, Snyder Village helps residents maintain their independence while providing the tools they need to stay safe in an increasingly digital world.

After all, protecting the people who spent their lives protecting us is something we can all agree is worth the effort.
